This post is a selection of most important WordPress plugins you should install on all sites you create. It’s not just a selection of plugins – these are definitive must have WordPress plugin recommendations I install on all my sites, right after I installed WordPress.
Table of Contents
The most important plugin for your website is your security plugin. Having no security plugin for your website is one of the most dangerous mistakes you can do. My recommendation for WordPress security is Wordfence. However other options like Sucuri are also very effective in protecting your website.
Wordfence offers high protection right out of the box. However you should take a look inside the Wordfence options. You can secure your website even more by instantly blocking other people that try to login with wrong user names.
If you set up a website you most often also want to make sure that it looks great in search results like Google search.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) plugins allow you to do exactly that. Your SEO plugin allows you to easily set your page’s title and description, that is then shown in Google’s search results. Additionally it also helps you optimize your page or post for your targeted keyword. My recommendation for WordPress SEO is Yoast SEO.
One thing I always instantly do after installing Yoast SEO: Setting categories and taxonomies to no-index (because they are not important for your rankings and may be viewed as duplicate content by Google) and also disabling author archives. The most recent version of Yoast SEO offers a great user experience therefore it’s my recommendation for your most have SEO plugin. However there are also other great SEO plugins out there.
Another life saver is your anti spam plugin. I previously used Anti Spam Bee and it did a marvelous job, however the lack of updates made me switch to WP-SpamShield.
WP-SpamShield is an install and forget plugin. It blocks annoying spam comments and contact form spam without your visitors (and you) noticing it.
These are three must have WordPress plugins I install on all of my sites. If you recommend other WordPress plugins that you use on all your sites, let me know in the comments.
